John currently teaches and performs full time in his hometown of Bath since gaining distinction in his Masters Degree in Music Teaching & Performance from The University of Southampton. John has many years of experience as a workshop leader and in teaching one-to-one lessons to all ages. Past projects have included leading the banjo course at the renowned Sore Fingers Summer School, co-hosting the banjo workshop at the Toronto Folk Alliance Conference with Tony Furtado, running various UK bluegrass festival workshops including Bristol Bluegrass Day’s banjo workshop and Swansea’s Gower Bluegrass workshop, and working with Young Folk Award finalists, The Jaywalkers, in a project bringing Bluegrass music into schools around Gloucestershire.
Alongside teaching, John tours internationally with various bands including Cardboard Fox, Thunderbridge Bluegrass Band, The Carrivick Sisters and Vintage Roots. Past bands have included The Coal Porters and The Great Western Revellers alongside work with Simon Mayor and Hilary James, Victoriana Vintage Band and stage appearances alongside John Paul Jones, Noam Pikelny and various other world class musicians.
As well as performing live, recordings projects have included session work on The Morning Key by Hatful Of Rain as well as Over The Edge, From the Fields and Jupiter’s Corner by The Carrivick Sisters and Find The One by the Coal Porters.
John graduated with BA (Hons) from the University of Southampton in 2010 majoring in classical guitar and was awarded the highest mark for performance that year. In 2011 he was presented with the St. Michael’s Church Scholarship and attained distinction for his Associate of Trinity College London diploma in 2008.
